While solid colors get a reputation as boring, these colors look bold and bright against cream. The fabric is luxurious cotton, even on a budget. Did you know using solids is more affordable than prints? Learn this and more below.

Quilting with Budget Friendly Fabric

• Solid color fabrics are one of the most affordable options when looking for high-quality or 100% cotton. They are often overlooked for the exciting (and expensive) patterns/prints available. The solids above are some of the softest cottons I’ve sewn with.
• Prints usually cost $13-$20+ per yard. When it comes to print fabric, there’s no limit on the price tags. Prints by designers rarely go on sale.
• I can find high quality solids like Kona Cotton Solids for $6-$8 per yard, even better if my local shop has a coupon or sale.
• If I estimate wrong on a pattern/print or make a mistake, the store may no longer carry it after I realize my shortage. Stores almost always carry solids! Even when a solid color runs out, it’s likely another one of the many brands has something that matches beautifully.

• Solids show off the design pattern, color scheme and quilting technique.
• The solid colors are high contrast which is perfect for baby’s developing eyes that are learning coordination. Lots for little’s to see when you create a pattern in solids.

Quilting With Solids is Timeless

• Children grow out of their favorite characters, but solid color fabrics are a staple. Quilting with solids never feels dated, which is especially important if you plan to pass the quilt throughout your family.
• Solid colors are nice when making a gender-neutral styles, when the gender of the baby is not known. Quilts with solid colors can easily age up with a growing child’s new bedroom.

Details Stand Out on Solid Color

• Details go unnoticed in a busy quilt with patterns but with solid color demand attention. For this baby quilt, I sewed on the diagonal with golden thread for a vintage touch. Applique or embroidery are options that will shine on the flat color.
• Consider the overall shape of the quilt as a detail to add to the quilt at no extra cost. In this quilt shown, I cut and bound rounded corners on only two corners. It created a swath shape that enhanced the “mod” feel I was going for.
• I also used. I used a pattern stripe for the binding for a beautiful, budget-friendly detail. Usually, local shops will cut small amounts for you.
