In the Shabby Chic Patchwork Quilt free pattern, raw edge rosettes are sewn throughout the quilt design in a wide array of sizes and floral fabrics. Learn how to sew your own quilted garden roses below for any project that needs the shabby chic makeover.

Step One: Cutting out the Rosette
When creating your rosette, you can include 1-5+ layers. Begin by cutting out the flower layer and subsequent smaller flower layers in an array of your fabric choices. These flower shapes are easy to free hand yourself but provided below are two printable templates to trace if needed.
Give each rose on the quilt a lot of variety, mix up what shape, patterns and colors are paired together. For example, layer the largest rose under two of the smallest sizes. Try pairing up shapes from rose set one and two.
Step Two: Attaching the Rosette
To attach the rosette to the block, use a free motion footer with the feed dogs placed down. If using a regular footer, simply sew slowly around the shapes. Before sewing, baste the flower shape with glue or pins. (If sewing the free Shabby Chic Rosette Quilt follow the quilt diagram shown at the link here.)

Follow around the flower with your sewing machine loosely 1/4 inch from the edge, allowing your sewing lines to overlap for a scrappy look. Then place the next flower layer on top and continue layering until you feel the rose looks complete.

Step Three: Embellishing the Rosette
For simple flowers with only 1 or 2 layers, consider adding stitching around the flower for more interest. No two roses look alike. This quilt will have infinite details to enjoy for years to come. If you add your embellished stitches before quilting the quilt together, you will be able to secure and hide threads easily.

Try adding some stitches to the center of the flower or around the flower. For extra contrast, I’ve used a thread with a sheen on it to contrast the white cotton. The look comes to life after a quick wash to soften the edges and some stitching detail.

These roses make a great addition to the Scrap Library’s shabby chic free pattern and perhaps in many more places in your fabric crafting projects. Don’t leave without learning about more of our free quilt patterns and home projects.
