It’s easy to lose ourselves in the never ending ways to decorate for holidays, weddings, showers and special occasions. I strongly believe we can have beautiful homes and spaces to celebrate without making backwards steps for sustainable living. Paper flowers are a great way to make an occassion feel elevated and special with only a few dollars. The paper flowers can be composted or recycled. I plan on making paper with the flowers petals in my garden this summer.

How to Decorate with Paper Flowers

Before you craft your paper flowers, having an idea of where you’ll place them will help you know how many you’ll need. The more paper flowers you make the bigger impression. It’s always impressive to have hanging elements so consider where you can add, place or string flowers from above.

Anything you can do with regular flowers you can do with paper flowers, thankfully paper flowers don’t need the kind of care real flowers do. Corners are the first spot I look at to fill and frame a space. Below the paper flowers are tucked them between the lamp and trays, backstage of the cookies and cupcakes. I paired it with a bow (reused from packaging) and baby’s breath to mix up the texture.

The white looks ombre to blue. Three lit white candles, a sprig of baby's breath. The lamp has a white bow around it.

Decorating with all the same size flowers just makes decorating difficult. Craft your flowers in various sizes. Pairing the flowers with different shapes, sizes and colors add variety. Paper flowers don’t have to all be the same color, isolating a color in the center can create a more realistic or playful look.

If throwing a shower, the paper flowers after the party can also be adding to bouquet for the rehearsal. This vignette below shows the paper flowers on a manikin. The sewing manikin was used to hang a robe for the bride made from her mother’s bridal dress.

A very large blue paper flower and small white flower, baby's breath and tuft of blue tulle are arranged on a manikin. The mankin has a silk white robe with lace. In the background there is an illegable card, blurry balloons and babys breath flowers.

When decorating with paper flowers, more ideas to pair with paper flowers include:

  • Paper fans
  • Real flowers – homegrown, baby’s breath (use flowers that don’t mind drying out)
  • Fabric tassels
  • Photos on a stick
  • Feathers
  • Bows
  • Cloth/fabric
  • Cut garden greenery, herbs or dried sticks, twigs

How to make a simple flower

There are many ways to make a flower! In fact, there is a flower making rabbit hole on the internet that could pull anyone in for days.

This is the simpliest way with the fewest materials/skills. If you are looking for a simple and effective paper flower this one is for you. Gather tissue paper, scissor, wire and tape. If you can’t find colors that suit your vision, try layering the tissue paper colors with white.

Trouble Shooting:

If you find that your flower isn’t as full as you’d like or you’d like to add a color in the center, make another flower the roughly the same size or smaller and stick inside the flower to bulk it out.
